I'm an arrogant English, Espanol, and Japanese speaking American. American culture and history is the most important and relevant, learning two other languages hasn't changed me. Hehe, JK, I get what you're saying.

I'm glad other people find meaning in this... To me it sounds like a long, unnecessarily dramatic emo rant. I'm fluent in four languages, can read in another two, and am in the process of learning two more. I love to learn and discover new questions, new uncertainties, new confusion. "Cultural schizophrenia?" Nothing of the sort. I choose to be syncretism embodied. I relish being an outsider, yet I also know how to find belonging. It is as close as one can get, I think, to spiritual fulfillment -- to be on a journey of discovery that you know you will never complete.

I think about this all the time. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, but traveled frequently, and have basically always bounced between Canada (and Quebec), France, sometimes places like Boston and Chicago, Denver, Oregon, and lived in California for many, many years and have family there as well. It can be difficult mentally to step through such radically different places. Sometimes I forget what language I am in, or wake up and forget where I am and whether I need to catch the train or walk or drive, sometimes I hand the cashier the wrong currency without realizing until they give me a weird look, etc. I do love traveling and immersing myself in different cultures, but people rarely talk about the mental toll it can take. It's a double-edged sword, a blessing and a curse.

This is my first good day in this year, when I return to my passions and just drift into the languages to find "a piece of home" in words I kinda understand (slowly learning Turkish it becomes clearer to me that Uyghur "sherba" is "çorba") You made my day better just by sharing the passion, journey and adventure, thank You 🎉 رەھمەت!🧐

Thanks for helping to dispel the myth that Cantonese is so impossibily incomprehensible to Mandarin speakers. Many people base this on first impressions from what they hear. But if you go a bit deeper the similarities are striking. Intelligibility isn't hard for Mandarin speakers with exposure to Cantonese content, and a bit of help/study, listening for the consistent tonal and vowel shifts and analysing the vocabulary, eg. it should be clear that 台 means table,乞人憎 means to 討人厭, when you know what the actual words are.

What a beautiful & accurate delivery. Knowledge & overcoming cultural barriers is even more important when politicians & media sell lies & division, especially in the West. On the other hand, country’s leadership can spread the message of “Liberté, égalité, fraternité" (“liberty, equality, fraternity") like we had in Yugoslavia. That’s why Yugoslavia was a thorn in the side of the West.
